What does social studies mean to me... It promotes civic learning and engages children in their education about their role in the community. Its the foundation for their self esteem, and the moral outlook they will have of the world that they are growing up in.
Family Traditions

Materials: Paper, markers, crayons. Beginning of Activity: Talk about all the different holidays that are celebrated in your classroom. Early: Have pictures of each of the holidays and ask the kids which one they celebrate. Have them decorate their own holiday picture. Middle: Ask the children to draw the holiday that they celebrate. Talk about the differences. Later: Ask them to draw something about the holiday they celebrate, the tradition, that is different from everyone else. End of Activity: Tell them its okay to be different from others and to accept these differences. Display the work. Follow-up Ideas: M&M activity- Different outsides, same insides. Doll HouseCommunity Roles 3+
Materials: Different dolls of community roles, dollhouse. Beginning of Activity: Talk about the different jobs within the community. Early: Ask the children about the dolls and what their jobs are around town. Middle: Children will use the dolls to act out the different roles in the community. Later: Ask the children about the roles. Can even ask them what they want to be when they are older. End of Activity: Read about community roles. Follow-up Ideas: Role Charades. Dress up |
Popsicle Stick TeepeesHistory 3+
Materials: Popsicle sticks, glue, markers, crayons, glitter, paint, brushes. Beginning of Activity: Talk about how people used to live back in the day. Early: Have the teepees pre-made. Allow the children to decorate them with the provided materials. Middle: Children will make teepees and decorate them with the materials. Later: Have the children make 3D teepees and decorate each side. End of Activity: Display teepees. Follow-up Ideas: Make a life size teepee to read under.
