Social and Emotional development means to me... It includes all of the child's experiences, how they express themselves, and the way they manage their emotions. Establishing positive relationships with family, friends, and others is a big piece of this puzzle.

Emotions 3+
Materials: Chart, markers, paper with child's name on it. Beginning of Activity: Talk about emotions. Have the chart prepared before hand. Early: Have a smaller variety of emotions and have their picture and name on the tag. Middle: During morning circle ask the children how they are feeling and they can put their name under that emotion and can change it through out the day. Later: Have a larger variety of emotions. End of Activity: Ask them why and try to help them feel better if they are sad etc. Follow-up Ideas: Emotion Charades. Paint Emotions. |
Mirror, Mirror
Empathy 3+
Materials: Mirror, Velcro, emotion faces and their names. Beginning of activity: Pair the children up. Read a book on emotions. Early: As a group make different faces in the mirror and name the emotion. Middle: Children will pair up, one child will make a face in the mirror and the other child has to name the emotion and try to duplicate it. Later: Children have to match the emotion face to its name. End of Activity; Ask them about the different emotions, were they able to name them all? Follow-up Ideas: Emotion Charades.
