What does language, literacy, and communication mean to me... They are all connected. They are developed through real life experiences. Experiences that are meaningful. Children learn by having you read to them, to watching you socialize out in public, and even what they see in the media. Its the way children learn about the world around them and how they fit into it.
Letter Tree Trunks
Alphabetic Knowledge 3+
Materials: Paper towel tubes, alphabet stickers, a marker. Beginning of Activity: In advance pint letters on the tubes randomly. Point out different letter in books and around the room. Early: Have fewer letters on the tubes Middle: Have the kids match the letters on the tubes with the stickers. Later: Mix in more letters upper and lower case. End of Activity; Display the Trees Follow-up Ideas: Outside the children can write letter on the walls with water. Kids match upper and lower case magnets. |
Reading Tree
Reading 3+
Materials: cut out a huge tree, stamps, paint, brushes. Beginning of Activity: Before hand make a tree. Children decorate the tree with letters and shapes. Early: Children look at picture books under the tree. Middle: Children will read a variety of books under the tree. Later: Children's books gradually get more difficult. End of Activity: put books away. Follow-up Ideas: Decorate tree with family photos. Put kids site words on the tree. |
Portrait of Love
Speaking 3+
Materials: paper, makers, crayons. Beginning of Activity: Tell the children what the word "communication" means. They will draw and communicate about what they love. Early: Have the children describe what they put in their picture, colors they chose. Middle: Have the children draw what they love to do and have them describe their activity and ask them how it makes them feel. Later: Ask more questions about the drawing/activity they love to do. Where they do it at? With who do they enjoy doing this activity? End of Activity: Better understanding of language. Follow-up Ideas: Show and Tell day. Describe what is going on in books. |
