Numbers, Counting, and Shapes Oh My!
What does math mean to me...What math skills they do learn set the building block for their future academics. Even before they reach the time school children are already starting to get a concept about math just from the experiences they have had. It helps develop critical thinking and early reasoning skills.
100 CollageCounting 3+
Materials: 100 glue able items, glue, brown paper bag, butcher paper. Beginning of Activity: Have 100 items prepared for children and count with them 1-100. Early: Count items with the children and glue them to one large paper as a class. Middle: Have the children count and glue their items to their paper bag. Later: Have the children bring in 100 small items from home. Have them count the items in groups of 5,10,15,20 etc. End of Activity: Children can take their bags home. Follow-up Ideas: 100 handprints. I would like 100... but not 100... |
Let's Bake a CakeMeasuring 3+
Materials: Cake mix, eggs, vegetable oil, measuring cups, mixer, bowls, plates, forks. Beginning of Activity: Talk about kitchen safety. Talk about measuring. Early: Have the children pour and measure pre-measured ingredients. They can take turns mixing. Middle: Children can mix ingredients and pour them in a large bowl and mix. Later: Have the children use other measuring tools/sizes. Instead of using a whole cup, use 1/2 cup. Pour and mix ingredients. End of Activity: Enjoy the baked treat! Follow-up Ideas: Measuring cups in sensory with sand and beans. Measure different liquids and solids. |
Making PatternsPatterns 3+
Materials: Stamps, Stamp Pads, paper. Beginning of Activity: Show them examples of patterns. Early: Use of simpler patterns. *#*#* Middle: Children will use the stamps to make different patterns. **#** Later: Can make the patterns more difficult. **%**%%**%** End of Activity: Children can take their patterns home. Follow-up Ideas: Point out patterns on clothing. Go outside and find patterns in leaves, trees, grass, flowers etc. |
